How to make a GIF from a video

1. Choose or drop a video file. It opens locally; nothing is uploaded.
2. Play to the moment you want and press Use current video time as start, or type a start time.
3. Pick a length, width and frame rate. Short and small works best.
4. Press Make GIF, check the preview and download it.

Getting a small, sharp GIF

GIF dates from 1987. It supports only 256 colours per frame and compresses poorly, so file sizes grow quickly. The three settings that matter most are width, length and frame rate. A 4-second clip at 480 pixels and 12 fps is usually a few megabytes; the same clip at 640 pixels and 15 fps can be several times larger. Clips with flat colours, such as screen recordings and animations, compress far better than camera footage.

If you are putting the clip on your own website, consider a short looping MP4 or WebM instead. They are often ten times smaller than an equivalent GIF and look better.
